This reminds me of a discussion we had in school, and one girl was talking about living in fear of her safety because she is a girl, and this guy chimed in and was all “It’s hard for guys too! I’m so awkward around girls! It’s embarrassing!” Yeah, not the same thing, exactly?

This reminds me of an article about online (heterosexual) dating that I read a while ago. It listed men’s and women’s worst fears about meeting someone from online. The highest ranked fear that men had was that their date would be fat, whereas the highest ranked fear that women had was that their date would turn out to be violent and kill them.

I think that says a lot.

A friend asked me the other day why I “waste” so much time reading “the same news from different sources”… Well, here’s why:

If you woke up in Paris this morning and read le Monde with your petit déjeuner, the first thing you’d hear about is the UN Secretary-General warning that Syria is on the brink of civil war. The New York Times has instead chosen to focus on the attack on UN peacekeepers. A person in Kuala Lumpur would have to flip through quite a bit of the New Straits Times before reading about Syria, in an article syndicated from the UK’s conservatively inclined Telegraph. The NST has also, via Bernama (Malaysia’s equivalent to Reuters or the AFP), emphasised Malaysia’s position against sanctions by running a vague, official statement alongside the Telegraph piece.

Left-leaning readers in the UK perusing the Guardian over their morning cuppa, would’ve read about Syria’s human rights abuses. In Melbourne, however, the goings-on in Syria are relegated to the the Age’s deplorably late “World” section, in a piece carrying the headline “87 dead in new Syrian massacre” (syndicated from the AFP).

Which brings me to my point:

If you read one paper, you are getting one view of the world. I rather like hearing from a number of sources, and piecing things together myself, particularly if I’m to then venture an opinion on it. Far too many people have strong opinions on things they know very little about. Read first, conclude later.

Greetings, tumblr.

I decided to audition for channel V’s host search. Everyone was saying how much they luuuuuuurve music, so I decided to go in a completely different direction. I don’t expect to win, but this did serve as the perfect procrastination from the MANY hours of assignment work I’m going to have to put in soon. Sigh.

I read an article the other day that won fat-hating bingo. Headless fatty? Check. Greasy hamburger? Check. Pseudo concern at health? Check. Inexplicable anger at fat people? Check.

Anyway, I thought people might be interested in reading the twitter conversation I had with the author. There were a lot of points I would have liked to bring up, but it’s a touch hard in 150 characters or less.

My sister Tamara bought me this hula hoop for Christmas. You’ll notice that it’s thick, brightly coloured and has funny little bumps on the inside. What you can’t see, is that using this hoop is akin to rolling around on a floor carpeted in lego.

Apparently when Tamara purchased this hoop, she was told that it was designed to give relaxing massages. What the saleswoman failed to mention was that the massage would be delivered by a WWA wrestler. Using a chair.

So while I’m all smiles in this photo, my innards are screaming at being pummelled from several different directions.

I really hope this doesn’t rupture something.

Why are attacks on female media personalities always so personal?

When Yumi Stynes made an off-colour joke about war hero Corporal Robert-Smith, no one could have predicted the spectrum of insults, abuse and threats that would ensue.

The debacle started when hosts of The Circle discussed a photo of the army veteran shirtless, in a pool.

“He’s going to dive down to the bottom of the pool to see if his brain is there,” Yumi said.

“I’m sure he’s a really good guy, nothing about poor old Ben. But that sort of bloke … and what if they’re not up to it in the sack?” Negus replied.

The public backlash was both immediate and strong, resulting in a personal apology from Yumi to Robert-Smith. The army Corporal graciously accepted the apology and said that he understood the comments weren’t intended to be malicious.

‘Brilliant,’ we all thought, ‘looks like everyone can go home now’. But, it appears the villagers were only just beginning to light their torches.

A week later, and the outrage-train is rattling on with frightening momentum. In particular, The Circle’s Facebook page has been inundated with a mixture of racist, threatening and misogynistic comments. “Give yumi to the Taliban,” one user demands. This comment receives 6 ‘likes’.

It’s not unusual for media personalities to say something stupid and then get a public slap on the wrist. But it is unusual for them to be hung, drawn and quartered for a fleeting, off-hand quip. What makes the Yumi backlash so alarming is the super-personal nature of the comments. Yumi has been threatened, her children have been threatened and if I had a dollar for every time someone called her a ‘bitch’, I’d be lounging in Fiji, retired.

What comes out of this shambles are two glaring questions. Firstly, why has Yumi copped the lion’s share of the scary, personal stuff while Negus has received relatively little? And secondly, if the man who was the subject of the insults can forgive and forget, why can’t we?
